Happy Christmas

So it's been forever. but I'm back to the blogosphere.
It's a Christmas Eve tradition to watch A Muppet Christmas Carol. It's all the wonder of A Christmas Carol with the glory that is the Muppets. Also, Michael Caine as Scrooge? wondrous! Did I mention it's a musical? There are lovely songs sung mainly by Muppets. I highly recommend it for holiday viewing.
Here's my favourite song.

If I Could Talk With the Animals...

Everybody knows The Beatles and The Rolling Stones but what are the other bands of the "British Invasion" of the 1960s? One of my favourites is The Animals. They didn't have as long or as prolific a career as the Beatles or the Stones, which is likely why they are less well known. There were also fights amongst the band members, mostly over lead singer Eric Burdon's desire to go solo. I'm a fan though, mostly of House of the Rising Sun, We Gotta Get Out of This Place & Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. I will now share the Animals. Please take a listen.

Rain, rain go away

It's raining today and I am at the museum by myself because people don't generally go for walks in the rain and we get mostly walk-in business. This whole situation is making me a little sad & when I'm sad & it's raining (like today) I like to listen to Cat Stevens. Share the Cat.

Awkward!

I used to like Joaquin Phoenix. I accepted that he was kinda strange because he made up for it by being a really good actor. Now he's nuts. Even if his whole leaving acting to start a rap (I know!) career thing is bullshit, he's still gone off the deep end by making very awkward public appearances, like this one on David Letterman last night. Why would you go on a talk show and refuse to talk? Dave tries to make the best of it, but it's still uncomfortable. It reminds me of the part in 'Annie Hall' when Alvy is talking to Annie's odd brother Dwayne.

Wait, Who are the Savages?

Over the past few years we have been innundated with the less than kind name calling by several supposedly "civilized" Westerners (mostly N. Americans) of Arab people or those of the Muslim faith. If we are more civilized, than why can't we accept the differences of others? I would like to illustrate my point with the song "Savages" from Pocahontas.
P.S. I find it interesting that Mel Gibson is singing about intolerance.

R.I.P. my Fellow Miriam

Miriam Makeba was a South African singer and critic of Apartheid. Her music was in the style of African folk and her support of the oppressed never wavered, even when she was banned from her homeland in 1960. She died yesterday in Rome after performing at a concert to benefit those who oppose the mafia. She was 76. Goodbye Miriam, i am proud to have shared a name with you.

The Dave Clark Five

The Dave Clark Five burst onto the music scene as part of the British Invasion in the early 1960's. Dave Clark was drummer and principle songwriter. The group broke up in 1970 due to in-fighting and the changing music scene. Despite being very popular, many have all but forgotten the DC5.

Chuck Baris & The Gong Show

The Gong Show was a 1970's variety show, but would now be known as a "reality" show. Chuck Baris was the host. The premise was that acts of dubious merit would perform before a panel of celebrity judges who were given 20 seconds before they could end an act's performance by hitting a large gong, known as "gonging". if an act survived without being gonged, the judges rated their performance on a scale of one to ten. the show sometimes got away with provocative acts, including the one in this video.

Chuck Baris later wrote an autobiography, which was made into a movie, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, in which he claimed to be a CIA spy while he was the host of The Gong Show. Sounds like he went a little crazy, no?

Shouldn't "What About Love" Have a Question Mark at the End of It?

I will admit, I love a good power ballad. "What About Love" is the quintessential power ballad. here it is, for your viewing pleasure.

Mac Attack

I didn't used to like Fleetwood Mac. I was wrong. they have their low points, I admit. they have songs I really hate. Dreams is not one of them. it is magic.
